GLOBAL COUNCIL INTERLINKAGE

PERSONAL PROJECT

Which World Economic Forum Council wants to interact with whom

Every year the World Economic Forum holds a survey in which all of their Councils are asked: "which other Council would you benefit from interacting with?". This visualization shows the interconnectedness between the Councils based on the result of this survey.

SURVEY DATA

This is a visual representation of data derived from a survey of experts from 72 Global Agenda Councils of the World Economic Forum. The experts were asked to answer three survey questions:

  • Please select a maximum of 5 Global Agenda Councils that your Council would benefit from interacting with by order of priority.
  • Please select a maximum of 3 Industry/Regional Agenda Councils that your Council would benefit from interacting with by order of priority.
  • Please describe how it interlinks with your Council.

Each Council consists of one or more organizations. Respondent Councils are the Councils that filled out the survey. Linked Councils are the Councils the respondent Councils want to interact with. There are 3 agenda's (Global, Regional and Industry) that contain a set of Councils.

THE VISUALIZATION

The visualization is a network diagram, with on the left (blue) the different respondent Councils, and on the right (orange) the linked Councils.

LINES

The width of a line represents the number of organizations in a respondent Council want to interact with a linked Council. The color of a line represents the strength of a link. Darker lines mean stronger links.

BARS

The width of a bar shows with many other Councils this Council wants to interact with. The height of a bar shows the total number of organizations for this Council.

INTERACTION

The user can interact with the visualization by hovering over one of the Councils. This will reveal the links specific to this Council.

Part of what I wanted to communicate with this visualization is that the survey could be improved by giving people less options (chose only 1 Council for instance) which will result in a more polarized result.

A detailed description of the components of the visualization is provided at the live visualization.
